Vehicular Queue Analysis

Right-sized storage and timing that prevent spillback before it happens.

Overview

Managing queues at intersections, drive-throughs, school sites, and access points is critical for safety, operations, and access. We perform queue analyses using observed data and HCM-based or microsimulation methods to size turn bays and stacking, optimize signal timing, and prevent spillback across the network.

We have delivered studies for signalized intersections, school dismissal, retail and restaurant drive-throughs, special events, hospital campuses, and construction detours across North Texas, with clear, buildable recommendations.

What's included

  • Data collection, including turning counts and percentile queues
  • HCM and simulation methods, including Synchro and VISSIM
  • Storage design for turn bays, tapers, and lane balance
  • Signal timing, including split and offset optimization
  • School and special-use dismissal and staging plans

Why it matters

Right-sized queue storage means fewer rear-end crashes and clearer crosswalks and driveways. Preventing spillback protects corridor progression, and right-sizing stacking for schools, clinics, and retail sites supports smoother daily operations. Data-driven, code-aligned designs also make city and TxDOT approvals more straightforward.
